Rectangular gaskets: materials, processing and applications

Rectangular gaskets, often also known as frame gaskets, are one of the most versatile and popular types in the industrial sealing sector. Used in a wide variety of production areas, these seals do not play a merely passive role: they ensure static and dynamic sealing against fluids, gases, dust and vibrations, making an active contribution to the functionality of the entire system.

At GB Group we custom design these gaskets, according to application and usage context, drawing on our in-depth knowledge of materials and technologically advanced machinery.

What are rectangular gaskets?

Unlike standard gaskets with a circular cross-section (O-ring), rectangular gaskets have a defined geometric profile with multiple sides, rendering them particularly suitable for applications with large surfaces or sharp corners. Their shape can vary from simple rectangles to more complex shapes, with grooves, rounded corners or differing thicknesses.

They represent the ideal choice when dealing with flat surfaces or compartments that require even insulation. In comparison to other solutions, they offer a high contact surface area and extremely good sealing capacity: they can effectively insulate against dust, liquids, moisture, air and vibrations, contributing to the protection and efficiency of the system in which they are installed.

They are ideal for applications subject to frequent opening and closing, thanks to their elastic memory. They can also be designed to perform secondary functions, such as sound insulation.

Their design means that they can compensate for any surface irregularities or limited mechanical movement, ensuring a stable fit every time. In many cases, these seals also act as elements for damping or modulated compression, improving operating comfort or the resistance of the structure in which they are housed.

Where are they used?

Rectangular gaskets are used in many areas, for example:

  • in the automotive sector, for closure systems, lights, electrical panels and dashboards.
  • in the electromechanical sector and in electrical panels, where they provide insulation and protection from external agents.
  • in the food or medical sectors, when made with materials certified for contact with food or sensitive liquids.
  • in industrial and hydraulic applications, for sealing housings, covers and frames.
  • In addition, there is an extremely wide range of cross-sector applications in numerous other areas that require a moulded gasket capable of offering a combination of sealing, elasticity and durability.

What materials are used for rectangular gaskets?

The material used to produce the gasket makes all the difference. The choice depends on the function of the component, the environmental conditions, the type of fluid with which the element will come into contact and the frequency of the related stress.

At GB Group we manufacture rectangular gaskets in rubber and thermoplastic materials (EPDM, NBR, silicone, FKM, TPU, TPE, etc.), selecting them according to their physical, mechanical and chemical characteristics, such as resistance to high temperatures, atmospheric agents, corrosive fluids, abrasion or continuous compression..

We are also able to design and manufacture customised compounds, perfectly adaptable to the technical application for which they are designed.

How are rectangular gaskets made?

Planning a rectangular gasket does not just mean designing a frame; it involves an in-depth study of every functional parameter, such as compression, elastic response, resistance over time or interaction with other materials.

Once the geometry has been defined, the next step is moulding. At GB Group, thanks to a specialised machine inventory, we can handle every step in-house: from prototyping to mass production. Our presses – both vertical and horizontal, with injection, compression and injection-compression systems – allow us to precisely process items of any size, up to 1200 mm.

Efficient departments, advanced mould engineering and flexible production enable us to meet the most specific requirements. The cycle is completed with quality control through automatic video inspection systems and constant supervision by experienced operators, who check every single gasket before delivery.
