Characteristics of high-temperature gaskets

Gaskets that are able to resist high temperatures play an essential role in many industrial sectors, and their properties can remain unaltered even when subjected to significant thermal stress; they do not lose their seal, they do not deform, and they maintain their surface pressure and function.

 

 In both cases, high-temperature rubber gaskets and components in other heat-resistant materials are required to guarantee optimal resistance, excellent protection levels, significant resistance to wear and durability.

 

Often, gaskets are not only subject to intense heat, but also to chemical substances (grease, acids, etc.) and to significant mechanical stress. This is why it is fundamental to design and create gaskets that are tailor-made to every application, defining the most functional design and the most suitable material for the specific purpose.

 

 

High-temperature rubber gaskets: the best materials

Gaskets destined to work under elevated thermal stress can be made from a range of materials, and the choice of material must essentially be based on the purpose of the components and the operating temperatures to which they will actually be subject.

 

In GB, the process of creating gaskets begins with the selection of the material best suited to the field of application. By carefully studying the requirements of the client, we are able to identify the raw materials best suited to the designated use, in terms of the heat resistance they will need to withstand.

 

All the materials that we use in our production processes are tested and certified, in order to guarantee elevated quality and consistent performance. The materials that we have been using, applying our extensive experience, include:

  • a wide range of elastomers, such as EPDM, FVMQ, FKM, NR, CR, NBR-PVC, HNBR, NBR, ACM, AU, SBR, VMQ.
  • thermoplastics, such as ABS, PA6, PA6.6, PA6.6 FG, PBT, PC, POM, TPE, TPU.
 

 

Rubber for high-temperature gaskets

Some rubber materials are considered to be better suited to resisting elevated temperatures as their characteristics allow them to resist well to thermal stress and offer durability. For example, FKM offers high resistance to flame and can be used in applications in which temperatures reach 250°C.

 

Other raw materials, such as FVMQ, resist temperatures of up to 175 – 200°C, while a material such as HNBR offers virtually no resistance to flame, but can be used in environments with temperatures of up to 150°C. This is also the case with ACM, which can easily operate at temperatures of up to 160 – 180°C. Then there is VMQ, which resists up to 180 – 220°C (even 260°C according to the specific formulation used), and burns slowly, without carbon residue.

 

High-temperature silicone gaskets

Silicone is one of the most heat-resistant materials, and can operate at temperatures of over 250°C, with peaks of up to 300°C. Some industrial silicones have even been designed to resist temperatures of up to 800°C.

 

Silicone gaskets therefore allow the sealing and fixing of joints in the widest range of industrial applications, counting on extensive durability and on particular resistance to corrosion and to wear. Silicone gaskets also resist particularly high pressures, and can withstand extreme compression, as well as offering elasticity and high-performance sealing, even in the most extreme conditions. This renders them an essential component in industrial sectors such as aerospace, hydraulics, electronics, food and many others.
